Dominic explains

Here he is moments after finishing fourth in the Nationals road race.  He can be quite loquacious at moments like this.

Photos from Nationals

3-2-1-Go! Start of the Time Trial.  They really give the riders the full big race experience.  Hey, I guess it is a big race.  Dominic finished 20th with a time of ~12:20.

Road race finish.  Andy Schmidt takes the win.  Dominic is the one yanking hard on his bars.  His Dad taught him that.

Dominic talked non-stop after the race (can you believe it?), once he caught his breath.  I'll put the video up later.

Lookin' good on the podium.

In the corral before the start of the criterium.  If you look closely you can find Dominic's teammate, Ethan, in there too.  As soon as the gates opened it was a sprint to the start line where they had to wait another ten minutes.  It's a tense time.

Last sprint of the weekend.  Job well done!

Dominic reaches podium at Nationals!

What an exciting weekend we had at the 2014 Amateur Road Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin!

Dominic came in fourth in the 13-14 Nationals Road Race (he's the first one on the left)
The road race came down to basically a 10 man sprint which Dominic played with real aplomb.  Starting at about 10th place he patiently picked off rider after rider on the lee side of the road -- there was a very strong crosswind.  Congratulations to Andy Schmidt, also of Wisconsin, for his win.  He started the sprint very far out and held it to the finish. He's a strong one, Andy is.

It's encouraging that Dominic can compete at such a high level with so little experience compared to the other boys on the podium.  We need to figure out how to get him to more races!  That would have helped in the criterium, where he found the large field to be a little overwhelming.  Still, he finished 17th, which isn't half bad.  He had the fitness to compete for the win, however, and only lacked the pack skills to get to the front.

Overall, it was a very fun and rewarding National Championship weekend.  Way to go, Dominic!

Also, Northstar Development had an incredible showing for their first year.  I'm not sure how many podiums there were in total, but we had two wins (Kelly Catlin), three 2nd places (Nick Carter), a third, a fourth and a fifth.   There might be more.
